In about 710 AD a monk called Eadfrith copied out the four gospels in Latin while living on the island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. 250 years later a priest named Aldred wrote a translation in Anglo Saxon between the lines of Eadfrith’s Latin text. This is now the oldest surviving copy of the Gospels in English. The Lindisfarne Gospels are now amongst the greatest national treasures held by the British Library, so valuable that they are kept in a glass case under high security. Although visitors can see a page, only a few experts have had the privilege of studying this priceless book. Most people now living in the UK would struggle to read the Anglo Saxon of the Lindisfarne Gospels. That’s why the Gospel of John made available free of charge from Bridge Builders is taken from the New International Version of the Bible translated from the original Greek manuscripts in 1985. In 1526 AD: William Tyndale produced the first printed edition of the New Testament in the English Language. Only two copies are still in existence of the 3000 he printed and one of these was bought by the British library in 1994 for over one million pounds. What do you see as the value of the Bible or the Gospel of John. We believe that the value of the Bible is in the message of the Gospel. The facts about how God sent Jesus into the world to be our Saviour. We believe that this is a life transforming message for all who will put their trust in Jesus. Everyone deserves to be able to read the Gospel in a language they can understand and at a cost they can afford. We are very privileged to have the Bible available in modern English. If you have never read the Gospel we would like to send you a copy free of charge - just leave a message on this website. We also want to supply Christians with free copies of the Gospel to give away. Bridge Builders is a fellowship of Christians who want to reach out to others with the good news. Members receive free gospels to use in witnessing, a free introduction pack, encouraging e-mails and a quarterly magazine. It's easy to join Bridge Builders and receive free gospels!
